Setbacks — injuries and other fitness-related issues — have been derailing Sania Mirza’s progress this season. The latest scare was when she suffered a bout of fever with just about a week to go for the Asian Games.
In contrast, Somdev Devvarman has enjoyed a watershed year. He broke into the top-100 in singles and followed it up with a gold at the Commonwealth Games. Devvarman is now looking to cap off the year with a good outing at the Asian Games. Sania is now looking to get a bit of rhythm her way with a good performance in Guangzhou.
“I had some fever and a throat and ear infection that kept me out for a week. But I have recovered now,” she told The Indian Express on Wednesday. “My comeback to big-time tennis is still a work-in-progress but I feel as well prepared as I could be.
I’m ready to give my best shot at the Asian Games. Returning from prolonged injury breaks is never easy but I am reasonably happy with the progress I’ve made over the last few months. I hope to build on this in the coming year,” Mirza said.
