The list of injured tennis players in the women's ranks has grown even longer following the Cincinnati Open.
Finalist Maria Sharapova aggravated a heel injury in the championship match against Kim Clijsters, who had advanced after Ana Ivanovic retired from their semifinal matchup due to a foot injury. Clijsters won the title after coming from behind to defeat Sharapova 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 following a rain delay.
Both Sharapova and Ivanovic are expected to compete in the upcoming U.S. Open, however they will be resting until then. Sharapova withdrew from the Rogers Cup in Montreal to give herself more time to recover.
Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic are not the only players heading to Flushing Meadows at less than 100%. Both Serena and Venus Williams are also fighting the injury bug.
