ATP players are once again jumping enthusiastically into charity work, with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic among two who will play a benefit football match Wednesday prior to their starts at the Miami Masters.
The match to raise finds for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan will be played against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, a minor- league pro team, with the contest held at a local high school to be followed by a benefit dinner with proceeds going to the Red Cross.
Others expected on the pitch will include Britain’s Andy Murray and Japan’s top pro Kei Nishikori, Frenchman Richard Gasquet, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez of Spain, Viktor Troicki of Serbia, Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
“I’m very concerned for the people of Japan and think it is only right that we do whatever we can to help those in need,” Djokovic said. “I would love to see all of Miami support both events.”
Tennis has held several benefits over the last two years in aid of the Haiti and Chilean earthquakes and January’s Australian floods in Queensland.
