Justine Henin has revealed she is in mourning because of her retirement from tennis due to a persistent elbow injury.
The seven time Grand Slam winner quit after losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the at the Australian Open and said that at the age of 29, it was time to hang up the racquet for good.
Despite quitting the game for the first time in 2008 due to the grind of the tennis circuit, Henin admits she is going to struggle with life away from the court. "I regard ending my career more like a sentence that's been handed down than a decision I've made. The will is there, but physically I can't [carry on]. Now I have to mourn the end of my career.
She added: "I'm going to miss all the great feelings you have as a professional tennis player. I hope I'll pick the racquet up again one day, but more than anything I want to live a normal life."
Henin first injured her elbow at Wimbledon in June 2010 and needed an operation but says the injury was still causing her problems six months later in Melbourne.
The Belgian star consulted with doctors after the tournament but came to the decision that she couldn’t carry on at the top level anymore.
She added: "It got to the point that I needed 10 minutes in the morning just to get my elbow functional.”
