The hard-serving, 20-year-old Vancouver native reached the second round of the Australian Open before dropping a 6-3, 5-7, 9-7 decision to French Open champion Francesca Schiavone. Marino, who is in Serbia now to represent Canada in Fed Cup competition this weekend, was pleased with her new ranking.
“Cool! 84th ranking, that’s a nice surprise for today!” she tweeted Monday.
Marino lost a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 contest to U.S. superstar Venus Williams in the second round of the U.S. Open last year before winning three straight ITF tournament singles titles.
Her surge up the world rankings came as 20-year-old Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., cracked the ATP Top 100 on the men’s side — moving up 58 spots to No. 94 after an impressive Australian Open performance. The powerful, six-foot-five Raonic made it to the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament before dropping a four-set decision 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 to David Ferrer of Spain.
