Japan's Ayumi Morita reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time Thursday thanks to a straight sets victory over French teenager Caroline Garcia in the women's singles at the Australian Open.

Morita, 20, was always in control despite a spirited effort from Garcia, at 17 the youngest player in the tournament, prevailing 6-4, 6-4 to set up a meeting with China's Peng Shua.

"I was able to maintain my composure from start to finish today and that proved to be the key to victory," said Morita. "It was a tough game and I am happy I came through."

"The more I continue winning the stronger I will become mentally. I will give it my best shot in my next match too," she said.

Peng pulled off a massive upset when she downed former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
