Russian Alisa Kleybanova ousted top-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA San Diego Open.

Jankovic, playing for the first time since injuring her left ankle a fortnight ago at the Slovenian Open, appeared ready to make quick work of Kleybanova when she broke the Russian's serve in the first and third games of the opening set, then held for a 4-0 lead.

But Kleybanova responded, breaking back to level the set at 5-5 and going on to pocket the first set when Jankovic knocked a backhand into the net.

Kleybanova then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second frame and Jankovic, who enjoyed a first-round bye, endured her first opening-match defeat since January.

At number two in the world, Jankovic became the highest ranked player beaten by Kleybanova, who now has four career victories against top five players.

Second-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur made it safely into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over US teenager Melanie Oudin.

Stosur, the French Open runner-up, used her powerful serve to control Oudin and broke the American late in each set to notch the victory.

"I felt like at the start I wasn't timing the ball as well as I wanted to," Stosur said. "But as the match went on, I felt like I played better and better. I dictated and thought I served well. Overall, I was very happy."

Polish fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Israeli seventh seed Shahar Peer each advanced to the quarters with straight-set triumphs.

Peer defeated Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5, 6-4 to book a date in the final eight against Radwanska, who downed former world number one Dinara Safina of Russia 6-1, 6-3.
