Serena Williams retained the world number one ranking in the latest women’s tennis rankings issued on Tuesday but appears under threat from Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki won a rain-delayed Montreal tournament on Monday, where Williams did not participate.

As an injury forced Williams to withdraw from the US Open, which starts next week, the Dane may be able to capture the top ranking.

Williams leads the standings with 7,895 points from Wozniacki (6,410) and Belgian Kim Clijsters (5,325). Clijsters beat Wozniacki for the US Open title last year.
