Elena Baltacha exited the Aegon Classic in Birmingham after retiring during her opening match with illness.
The British number one lost the first set of her meeting with Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-1 before pulling out.
It was not clear if Baltacha, 26, was still feeling the effects of heatstroke she suffered after winning the Aegon Trophy on 5 June or had food poisoning.
Fellow Briton Anne Keothavong came from behind to start her campaign with a 4-6 7-5 7-5 win against Pauline Parmentier.
Keothavong, the British number three, was a break down in the deciding set but pulled through to see off her French opponent to set up a second-round meeting with China's Li Na, who received a first-round bye.Baltacha, however, joins compatriots Heather Watson, Katie O'Brien, Melanie South and Naomi Broady in falling at the first hurdle.
The Suffolk-based Scot, who reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2009, will rest for a couple of days before turning her attention to the Aegon International in Eastbourne, which begins on 14 June.
"I didn't feel too bad in the warm-up but I felt terrible by 2-1," said the 12th seed. "I felt sick. I got the trainer and the doctor on and they gave me some pills but they didn't really help.
"I wanted to try to battle on but it was just dragging me down. My preparation wasn't great and I ended up spending a couple of days in bed before coming here.
There were also defeats for sixth seed and French Open quarter-finalist Yaroslava Shvedova, who lost 6-4 6-4 to qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva, and number eight seed Andrea Petkovic fell to Anna Chakvetadze by the same scoreline.
There were few problems for number five seed Sara Errani, though, as she beat Shenay Perry 6-2 4-6 6-1, while Magdalena Rybarikova, Angelique Kerber and Alla Kudryavtseva also reached round three.
In other first-round matches, Karolina Sprem defeated Kristina Barrois 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) and Jill Craybas saw off Sophie Ferguson 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-3).
Baltacha, Keothavong and 16-year-old Laura Robson were due to compete on Tuesday but persistent rain meant only three matches were completed.
Vania King, seeded 16th, beat Kirsten Flipkens 6-4 6-0 while Ayumi Morita defeated Maria Elena Camerin 6-2 3-6 6-2.
Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak was the other player to progress, beating Australia's Alicia Molik 7-5 6-1.
Robson, who won her first match on the WTA Tour circuit on Monday, plays world number 16 Yanina Wickmayer in round two.
