Maria SharapovaMaria Mania began with a hiss rather than a roar in Auckland today with the ASB Classic's top drawer player Maria Sharapova making a quiet entry into New Zealand.

Sharapova arrived at Auckland Airport with little fanfare. There were few fans to greet her off the Air New Zealand flight from Los Angeles and she was whisked off to a waiting car, deciding not to give any interviews despite the large media turnout.

Sharapova, ranked 18 in the world, will spend the day recovering from the flight and getting over the jet lag, but she is expected to go to the ASB Tennis Centre some time over the next couple of days for a hit out.

Many of the top players for the Classic will be arriving in New Zealand over the next 24 hours but most of them will be hoping for better luck than the tournament's other former world No 1 Dinara Safina from Russia.

Safina's flight to New Zealand was cancelled and it's now not known when she'll be able to catch another flight to make it to Auckland.
